Figma vs Miro vs Novastart: Design Tool, Whiteboard, or Infinite Canvas OS?

Figma vs Miro: Best Tool for Prototyping, Whiteboarding, and Team Collaboration

Figma, Miro, and Novastart all use canvas-style interfaces, but the objects and workflows inside those canvases are fundamentally different.

Figma, Miro, and Novastart can all be described with words such as canvas, collaboration, multiplayer, and visual workspace. That surface-level similarity can make them sound more interchangeable than they are. In practice, each product starts at a different layer of the work stack.

Figma is primarily a product-design platform. Miro is primarily a collaborative visual workspace and online whiteboard. Novastart is an operating-system-style environment that places live applications on an infinite canvas. The easiest way to understand the differences is to ask a simple question: what is the native object on the canvas?

Figma: the native object is the design

Figma’s strength is precise visual design. Frames, components, vectors, text, prototypes, design systems, and developer handoff are first-class concepts. The platform has expanded substantially, but the center of gravity remains creating digital products and visual assets. Figma’s own design product page describes a collaborative canvas for detailed design work and multiplayer editing.

If a team is building a mobile interface, website design system, product prototype, or set of reusable UI components, Figma is the most specialized of the three choices. Its canvas is infinite, but what matters is the design structure inside it.

Miro: the native object is the idea or planning artifact

Miro’s canvas is optimized for thinking together. Sticky notes, shapes, diagrams, mind maps, workshop templates, user journeys, roadmaps, voting, timers, and comments help groups externalize ideas. The exact pixels of an interface are usually less important than alignment and participation.

That makes Miro useful earlier in a project or at moments when a team needs to step back. A product group might map user problems in Miro, turn the result into a roadmap, and then move into Figma to design the actual experience.

Novastart: the native object is the live application window

Novastart uses the canvas at the operating-system level. A browser, spreadsheet, document, AI assistant, chat app, design tool, or file manager can occupy a position on the canvas while remaining interactive. The user can zoom out to see a project landscape and zoom in to work inside one application.

That means Figma or Miro can themselves become objects inside a larger Novastart workspace. The product is not trying to reproduce Figma’s vector editor or Miro’s workshop toolkit. It is trying to organize the applications around them.

    How collaboration differs

All three products are collaborative, but the scope of collaboration changes. In Figma, teammates collaborate inside a design file. In Miro, they collaborate inside a board. In Novastart, the goal is to collaborate inside the broader workspace, with multiple people using independent cursors across the shared canvas.

This distinction becomes important when a project crosses application boundaries. A meeting may begin with a diagram, jump to customer research in a browser, update a spreadsheet, reference a design, and finish in a project tracker. Figma and Miro can link or embed some of that context. An operating canvas aims to keep the applications themselves present.

How AI fits into each model

Figma has been adding AI to design and product-development workflows. Miro uses AI to help generate, cluster, summarize, and transform board content. In both cases, AI is integrated into the application’s native work.

Novastart approaches AI as another participant in the workspace. Computer-use agents can receive their own cursors and operate visible windows. Multiple helper agents can work in parallel while a human watches, pauses, corrects, or takes control. That is a different interface philosophy: AI is not only a feature inside an app; it can act across apps in the same spatial environment.

    Which one should you use?

Use Figma when the central job is designing and prototyping digital products. Use Miro when the central job is brainstorming, facilitating, mapping, or aligning a group visually. Use Novastart when the problem is broader workspace organization—too many applications, too much hidden context, or a need for multiple people and AI agents to operate in the same computing environment.

The choices are not mutually exclusive. A product team could keep a Miro strategy board beside a Figma file, a browser full of research, a spreadsheet, and a chat app on one operating canvas. In that scenario, Figma and Miro remain specialized tools while Novastart provides the room they sit in.

The larger shift: from app-centric to workspace-centric computing

The comparison points to a broader trend. Software is becoming more collaborative and more spatial. The first step was making individual documents multiplayer. The next was creating shared canvases that hold many artifacts. The operating-canvas model asks whether the entire computer can become multiplayer and spatial as well.

Figma, Miro, and Novastart therefore represent three layers of the same evolution: the artifact, the board, and the workspace. Understanding that hierarchy makes it much easier to choose the right tool—and to see why a team may ultimately use all three.
