7 Mistakes That Kill Your Profit on Depop

Struggling to make money on Depop? Learn the 7 common mistakes that eat into your profit and how to fix them to sell smarter and earn more.

Selling on Depop feels like finding buried treasure in your own closet. You snap a photo, post it to the world, and wait for the notifications to roll in. But for many sellers, that “cha-ching” sound is followed by a disappointing reality. After paying for shipping, packaging, and fees, that big sale might only leave you with enough for a cup of coffee. It is easy to feel like you are working for free if you do not watch your margins.

If you want to turn your side hustle into a real money-maker, you have to stop the small leaks in your ship. Making a profit is about more than just selling clothes; it is about smart business habits. By avoiding these seven common mistakes, you can protect your earnings and watch your bank account grow.

    1. Guessing Your Shipping Costs

Many Depop sellers lose money because they guess how much a package weighs.

If you tell a buyer shipping is five dollars, but the post office charges ten, you have to pay the difference. This mistake eats directly into your profit before the item even leaves your house.

To fix this, you should buy a small kitchen scale to weigh your items before listing them.

Knowing the exact weight of the item you’re shipping allows you to set the right price for the buyer. This simple step ensures that you never have to pay out of your own pocket to send a package.

    2. Forgetting to Track Hidden Fees

It is a common mistake to think the sale price is the amount of money you get to keep.

Even when Depop lowers its selling fees, payment processors like PayPal or Stripe still take a small cut. These tiny percentages can add up to a large amount of money over a busy month.

You should always use a Depop fee calculator to see your actual take-home pay. The calculator does the math for you so you know exactly how much to charge to hit your profit goals.

Seeing the final number before you post helps you avoid underpricing your favorite vintage pieces.

    3. Taking Dark or Messy Photos

A blurry photo is one of the fastest ways to kill a potential sale on Depop.

Buyers on Depop scroll very quickly and only stop for items that look professional and clean. If your clothes look wrinkled or the room is too dark, people will assume the item is of poor quality.

You do not need a fancy studio to take pictures that sell. Simply hang your item on a plain wall near a bright window during the day.

Clean, bright photos allow you to ask for a higher price because the item looks much more valuable to the shopper.

    4. Writing Short and Vague Descriptions

If you only write “cute shirt” in your description, you are missing out on thousands of potential buyers.

People use specific words to search for the styles they love, like “y2k” or “oversized.” If those words are not in your post, your item will stay hidden at the bottom of the search results.

Include the brand, the material, and the exact measurements of the garment. This helps the buyer feel confident that the item will fit them perfectly.

When a buyer knows exactly what they are getting, they are much more likely to hit the buy button.

    5. Hiding Damage or Stains

Trying to hide a small hole or a faint stain might help you sell an item today, but it will cost you tomorrow.

Unhappy Depop buyers will ask for a full refund or leave a bad review on your Depop profile. These returns are expensive because you often lose the money you spent on shipping.

Always take a close-up photo of any flaws and mention them clearly in your text. Most buyers do not mind a small bit of wear if they know about it ahead of time.

Remember, being honest builds a great reputation, which leads to more sales in the long run.

    6. Ignoring Your Shop for Too Long

Depop rewards sellers who are active on the app every single day. If you post twenty items on Monday and then disappear for two weeks, your shop will lose its momentum.

Depop algorithm favors resellers that are constantly adding new items for buyers to see and shop.

Try to space out your listings so you are posting at least one or two items daily. This will keep your Depop shop at the top of Depopers’ feeds and bring in fresh eyes.

Consistency is the secret key to making sales on Depop while you sleep.

    7. Buying Inventory Without a Plan

It is easy to get excited at a thrift store and buy everything that looks cool.

However, if you buy items that are out of style or the wrong season, they will sit on your shelf for months. Money tied up in old clothes is money that is not growing in your bank account.

Research what is currently trending on Depop before you go out and spend your cash. Look at what top sellers are posting and see what items are selling out quickly.

Sourcing items for reselling with a plan ensures that your items turn into cash as fast as possible.
